Canada-based Anglo American Exploration and University of British Columbia have started copper exploration operations in 22 mineral zones located in the Iranian provinces of East and West Azarbaijan, Ardebil and Zanjan, the head of explorations at National Iranian Copper Industries Company announced.
Babak Babaei added that the operations are scheduled to continue until May 16, Mes Press reported.
The Canadian experts had first visited the zones back in August 2016 for preliminary explorations.
NICICO is the leading copper producer in the Middle East and North Africa region and its mines hold close to 14% of Asia’s copper deposits and about 3% of global reserves.
Iran possesses about 4 billion tons of estimated copper reserves, the Geological Survey of Iran said.
