An advisor to agriculture minister said all soybean oil in Iran is imported from Argentina and Brazil and produced from seeds of genetically modified soybean plants.
Referring to the ongoing debate on production of GM food in Iran, Alireza Mohajer added that it is not clear why some people claim Iran produces GM food on a large scale.
Domestic production of GM food is still in the trial and error stage, ILNA quoted Mohajer as saying.
A genetically-modified organism is a plant or animal whose DNA has been modified without using natural methods of reproduction. Individual genes are transferred from the “source” organism into the DNA of the “target” organism.
This produces crops that carry certain traits such as resistance to insect damage or improved nutritional value.
