More than 9.7 million tons of oil and non-oil goods were transported via rail to and from Shahid Rajaei Port in the southern Hormozgan Province during the seven months of the current Iranian year (started March 20), registering a 20% rise compared with last year’s corresponding period, according to the director general of Hormozgan Railroads. “The share of railroads in [Shahid Rajaei’s] overall cargo transportation has reached 20%,” Mohammad Pourfakhri was also quoted as saying by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development’s news service. He attributed the rise in rail transportation to expansion of railroads in the southern port. Shahid Rajaei is Iran’s biggest container port near the Strait of Hormuz and handles more than half of Iran’s total imports and exports.
