Iran’s major mining companies manufactured more than 15.1 million tons of iron ore concentrate in the first half of the current fiscal year (started March 20). The Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization reported on its website that this indicates a 21% rise in production volume compared with last year’s corresponding period. Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Complex accounted for 4.8 million tons of the total sum, Golgohar Mining and Industrial Complex for 5.9 million tons, Iran Central Iron Ore Company for 1.9 million tons, Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company for 1.7 million tons and Sangan Iron Ore Complex for 699,000 tons. “Iran intends to become self-sufficient in iron ore concentrate production by the end of the current Iranian year (March 2017),” Minister of Industries, Mining and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said. As per the goals envisioned in the 20-Year Vision Plan (2005-25), crude steel production capacity is to reach 55 million tons per year in less than a decade.
