Three people died in an accident at Mobarakeh Steel Company’s plant in Isfahan on Wednesday, while two other people were injured.
A control cabin in the iron ore processing plant of the company plunged to the ground, killing two workers instantly and injuring three others, BBC reported.
One of the injured died of his wounds after being rushed to hospital, state-owned ILNA reported. The names of the workers killed and injured in the accident have not been released to the media.
One of the cables that held a control cabin broke loose, causing the cabin to plunge to the factory floor, the company’s head of public relations, Mohammad Nazer Harandi, said, according to Boursepress.
The executive oddly said: “The terrible accident happened, considering the hardships in the Mobarakeh Steel industry,” without further explanation.
Early reports in local media claimed only two dead and a third person injured.
According to medical authorities, 350 workers died from various accidents in their workplace during the first quarter of the current fiscal year (started March 20).
The high mortality rate among workers highlights the low regard for safety in Iranian industries.
The shares of Mobarakeh, the Middle East and North Africa’s largest steel producer, closed 0.5% lower at 1,191 rials on Wednesday.
Harandi said the precise cause of the accident will be released next week.
