More than 12.4 million tons of iron ore concentrate were domestically produced in the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-August 21), registering a 20% rise compared with last year’s corresponding period, Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization reported on its website.
Golgohar Mining and Industrial Complex accounted for more than 4.8 million tons of the total sum; Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Company for 4.05 million tons; Iran Central Iron Ore Company for 1.6 million tons; Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company for 1.5 million tons and Sangan Iron Ore Complex for 585,259 tons.
Minister of Industries, Mining and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said Iran seeks to become self-sufficient in iron ore concentrate production by the end of the current Iranian year (March 2017) to supply the growing needs of its domestic steel industry. As per the goals envisioned in the 20-Year National Vision Plan (2005-25), crude steel production capacity is to reach 55 million tons per year in less than a decade.
