New deposits of thermal and metallurgical coal have been discovered in the north and central Iran, which are estimated to be more than 350 million tons, announced Iran Minerals Production and Supply Company, a subsidiary of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization.

The discovery came as part of IMIDRO’s vast exploration project that surveyed an area extending over 200,000 square kilometers in 2013.

Thermal coal, the world’s most abundant fossil fuel, is primarily used to produce energy, while the less plentiful metallurgical coal is used in the production of coke, a key material used in steel manufacture.
