Iran’s senior to Russia says Tehran expects major financial institutions in that country to start cooperating soon with their Iranian peers.

Ambassador Mehdi Sanaei believes Tehran and Moscow have achieved “some positive results” in talks on establishing a Russian-Iranian bank, Sputnik reported Friday.

The diplomat also expressed hope that the central banks in the two countries would “take effective steps toward national currency exchange” to promote the development and extension of two-way trade and economic ties. Tehran is also interested in Russian presence in investment projects in Iran, the ambassador said.

Most large Russian banks suspended relations with Iranian banks in the past few years amid sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program. The restrictions were lifted earlier this year, after the International Atomic Energy Agency released a report in January stating that it had found no evidence of nuclear weapons development in Iran.
