The sixth five-year development plan  (2016-21)includes clauses calling for developing green national account systems to consider the environmental costs of economic activities, said Valiollah Seif, Central Bank of Iran governor.

“Green national accounts is a common trend across the world; Iran has developed such a plan, at the behest of of Department of Environment,” the CBI website quoted him as saying during the 15th International Environment Exhibition on Monday.

“The central bank, the Planning and Management Organization and Department of Environment have jointly developed the scheme.” National accounts or national account systems (NAS) are the implementation of complete and consistent accounting techniques for measuring the economic activity of a nation.

The senior banker noted that a “green economy” is based on promoting welfare and could “help us recognize the value of natural resources, reduce deforestation and promote efficiency in energy consumption.”

“By defining the cost of destroying the environment, a green economy will help us implement suitable policies to curb pollution through levying green tax and imposing penalties for polluters.”
