Improving manufacturing and trade are the two main ingredients for economic growth and development, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the Expediency Council said Thursday.

Addressing a meeting of entrepreneurs and business leaders, the former president called for tapping domestic know-how while utilizing foreign experience and international cooperation on the road to sustainable development

He pointed to the plunge in oil prices saying the government is facing a challenge when it comes to managing the shrinking revenues.

“We are going through one of the most difficult times in the domestic economy. Our sources are limited and should be managed in the best possible manner,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA. Rafsanjani criticized the previous administration for mismanagement and waste at a time when crude prices were high.

Stressing the need and significance of reviving the production sector and struggling domestic industries, he called for close cooperation between governorates and banks to help revamp manufactures.

The government and its policymakers have often been urged to inject liquidity into the key manufacturing sectors. Iran has got markets with high potential due to its geography, population and educated human resources.

On the nuclear accord with the six world powers last summer, the influential senior cleric who has strongly supported the agreement, complained that hardliners in and outside the country have been doing all they can to kill the historic deal. The July agreement calls for ending the international sanctions against Iran for curbs on its disputed nuclear program.
