Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization has unveiled the Geographical Information System for the mining sector.The GSI is designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage and present all types of spatial or geographical data. A well-designed, implemented and supported GIS management structure is critical to the success of any mining operation. According to Ali Asgharzadeh, the head of IMIDRO’s exploration division, the organization established the initial GIS database after exploring 250,000 square kilometers of mineral-rich zones across the country. “The development of this technology will fill the information gap for mining firms and save the substantial cost of re-explorations,” he said. Asgharzadeh noted that GIS’s development is an ongoing process, as it started in 2008 and is still expanding. He called on private companies active in the field of mineral exploration to contribute to the buildup of the system’s database.
