Cement exports to Iraq have recently seen a 20% drop as the Arab country’s demand has decreased over the sluggish pace of construction projects, said secretary general of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, Jahanbakhsh Sanjabi. “In addition, cement production in Iraq has increased as a number of cement production plants in the northern and southern regions of the country have been activated,” ISNA quoted him as saying. Iran ranked first in cement exports worldwide by selling more than 19 million tons of cement overseas last year, according to Morteza Lotfi, vice president of Cement Industry Employers Association. The country had a 7-percent share in the 4.1 billion tons of cement produced worldwide in 2014 while China accounted for 50% of the total. Iraq accounted for 80% of the overseas market for Iranian cement during the period. Other export destinations include Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan among other Commonwealth of Independent States. There are 68 cement plants in Iran.
