Iran’s Motorcycle Safety, Quality Standards Upgraded

As per a ruling issued by the Ministry of Industries, motorbike safety and quality standards have been upgraded and eight new standards have been added to the existing 17. All Iranian firms producing and assembling the two-wheelers are obliged to meet the new rules by the end of the current fiscal that ends in March, ISNA reported. Traffic Police will not issue license plates to bikes that fail to meet the standards, which include quality improvement in the gas tank safety, mileage and emission rates. Motorcycles are singled out as one of the main air-polluters coming after the old and dilapidated heavy vehicles and substandard locally-made cars. According to Health Ministry data, 5,000 motorcyclists die annually in road mishaps. According to the Department of Environment, motorcycles have 10% share in the air pollution in major urban areas and contribute terribly to the health concerns of the people.
