The first phase of new car license plate registration commenced in Qeshm Free Trade Zone this week allowing vehicles from the tax free island to enter the mainland without having to pay for a temporary license plate.

Before this car owners in the free zones needed temporary license plates and permits to enter the mainland while the new versions will remove the hassle and allow them to enter for up to 30 days, ISNA reported.

According to the scheme, all seven Iranian free zones will  upgrade gar dually to the new system. The Persian Gulf Qeshm Island has been chosen as the pilot phase.

Colonel Saeed Rouhi, of the National License Plate Department, said more than 35,000 vehicles are currently registered in the southern island while the capacity is for 59,000 plates.

“By the end of the project we expect a total of 782,000 vehicles in the free zones to be numbered as per the new system.”

The new number plates are featured with “free-zone logos”, Persian and English numbers, and have the license plate design of the mainland.

They also are of the same color patterns as those in the mainland. For example white plates are allocated to private cars, yellow to public and red to government-owned vehicles.
