The judiciary is set to push forward with a national scheme to significantly reduce the number of car thefts in the country.
Head of the judiciary’s Crime Prevention Bureau Alireza Savari, told state TV as per the scheme all vehicle owners will be required to install a tracking device in their cars.
Savari said, “In recent years 70,000 vehicles have been stolen across our major cities. The national scheme is aimed at reducing this number.”
According to the official, SAIPA’s Pride and Iran Khodro’s Peugeot 405 and Samand have been the main targets of car burglars due mainly to the low quality of the anti-theft devices used in the models.
The proposed tracking system will collect the data on vehicle location in a database with the national police. In case the car is stolen the police will be able to locate it in few minutes and nab the thief.
The initial phase of the plan will be launched in August and the tracking system will be installed on half a million cars.
Car owners will be charged 800 to 1 million rials ($21 to $26) for the device. However Savari failed to provide any further detail about the devices not mentioning whether they will be imported or locally produced or what company will sell them.
Car trackers in the international market are priced at $11 to $130, depending on the services and options companies offer.
Modern vehicle tracking systems commonly use GPS technology for locating the vehicle.
Vehicle information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or specialized software.
