A Mercedes-Benz AMG GTS has been spotted in Tehran’s northern Tajrish area on May 2, according to car fans who say the high-end sports car is the first of its kind in the capital. Although it has a temporary license plate, meaning the vehicle owner will have to pay an equivalent amount of the car’s value to the Customs Administration, the GTS will be allowed to stay on the capital’s roads for three months, Akhbar Khodro reported. The expensive car has a 4-liter engine capacity and as per government rules, is classified under “luxury consumer goods” which are not allowed to be imported. In the international market, the car is priced $186,000, according to US websites. Cars with engines larger than 2500 cc (2.5 liters) are not allowed into Iran although during the past few months some people have attempted to smuggle such cars into the country. For instance, 12 smuggled cars with engine capacities higher than 2.5 liters were confiscated in Fars Province in the previous Iranian year (ended March 20). The vehicles later were re-exported to Persian Gulf states.
