Police cars across the country will be equipped with license plate scanning equipment. “Equipping police cars with the latest technology is part of a drive to use the latest technology to fight crime,” said deputy police chief colonel, Reza Moazzen, IRNA reported. The little-known surveillance technology, called Automatic Plate Number Recognition, equips police vehicles with cameras that can record car license plate numbers and log the data for tracking outstanding warrants, suspended licenses and stolen vehicles. The cameras capture license plate images, including information such as date, time and location, and feed them to a laptop with GPS within the vehicle. “Last year, incorporating the technology developed by local knowledge-based companies, the cameras were trialed on police cars in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Isfahan, Fars and Khorasan Razavi,” Moazzen said. Several companies, including those from Turkey and Britain, have made attempts to gain a share in Iran’s ANPR market.
