BMW 8 Series Returning Soon

BMW 8 Series Returning Soon

It looks like we finally know what the 2013 BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept was all about.

Autocar reports that BMW will resurrect the 8 series, dormant since 1999, in four years.

The next-generation 8 series will be the brand's flagship and borrow heavily from the 7 series' parts bin.

The report says BMW could go two ways with the 8 series: a four-door hardtop-only design similar to the 6-series Gran Coupe, or a classic two-door coupe and Cabrio duo.

It'll be interesting to see if regional markets will play a role in the decision; China pretends that the coupe does not exist as a type of automobile.

The grab of yet another number by BMW is hardly surprising, but what is surprising is how long it took the marque to challenge the Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe head on.

The S-class coupe was called the CL class when the last 8 series roamed the autobahn, but neither big boat was a hot-seller in the 1990s.

Exact styling of the cars remains unknown, apart from a few artistic impressions along the way. However, expect models such as the two-door type of its previous iterations.
