Taxi passengers in Tehran can pay their fares using point of sale devices in the near future.

City Bank (Bank Shahr) is to provide these devices for Tehran Traffic and Transportation Organization's taxis.

"The first stage was the production of 15,000 POS devices and distributing them among taxis in the capital. We are now awaiting their installation," Jafar Tashakkori-Hashemi, director of Tehran Traffic and Transportation Organization, told Young Journalist Club.

Tashakkori-Hashemi noted that this was a novel act and first it was tested to see whether taxi drivers and passengers found electronic payment easy and congenial.

"The project was first piloted on 1,000 taxis," he said.

It is predicted that most taxis in the Iranian capital will be equipped with a POS device in less than two years. But the expenses of the project do not allow the organization to install these devices in all taxis yet.

Currently, organizations are liable to pay the cost of the devices and not the drivers like in other countries.
