Cargo owners who choose to transport their goods via small ports will be entitled to a 20% discount in customs duties, says Mohammad Ali Hassanzadeh, the deputy head of Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran.
“Sailors would also benefit from customs duty-free allowance for doing business in small ports,” he added.
As per the law, each sailor is allowed to take home up to 100 million rials ($860) worth of goods, six times a year duty-free.
There are 50 small ports in Iran, particularly along southern coastlines of the country, of which 33 are owned by the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran.
“Small Iranian ports, where cargo vessels of 500 to 1,000 tons can dock, are equipped with breakwaters and warehouses. They account for 5.7% and more than 9% of Iran's total trade in terms of tonnage and value, respectively,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
