The Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare is planning to send 5,000 workers overseas in the current Iranian year (March 2019-20).
“Last year, up to 2,000 Iranians were sent abroad to work through the ministry’s Department of Employment Promotion,” Deputy Cooperatives Minister Mohammad Akbarnia said.
Noting that Iran accounts for less than 1% of the $600 billion worth of international staffing industry, the official added that from neighboring countries like Iraq to Eastern European countries, Canada and Australia, all have specific workforce needs in different fields such as construction and information technology.
“More people are now willing to work overseas, given the depreciation of the local currency against foreign currencies,” he was quoted as saying by Eqtesad Online.
