Over 3.3 million tons of barley are estimated to be produced in Iran in the current fiscal year (March 2019-20) to register a 10% increase compared to the previous year, the director general of Agriculture Ministry's Grains and Basic Goods Department said.
“Every year, barley is cultivated on 600,000 to 700,000 hectares of rain-fed and 900,000 to 1 million hectares of irrigated land across the country. We will owe this year’s ample yield to increased levels of precipitation in most of our provinces,” Faramak Aziz Karimi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
Barley worth $479 million were imported into Iran during the 10 months to Jan. 20, registering a 17% rise compared with the similar period of the year before, latest data released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration show.
Iran was the top importer of barley from Kazakhstan in September–January 2018-19, as it bought 1.1 million tons of the grain during the period, which marks a 46% year-on-year rise, UkrAgroConsult reported.
