More than 2 million tons of oil and non-oil goods were handled in the ports of the southern Qeshm Island during the first three months of the current Iranian year (started March 21), according to the director of the island’s Ports and Maritime Office.

“The figure shows 7% increase compared with the similar period last year”, Mehr News Agecy quoted Bagher Mousavi as saying.

Imports and exports from the island in the first quarter of this year indicate 8% and 39% growth respectively, the official noted, adding that traffic in the maritime routes leading to the ports of the island increased by 2%. “More than 30,000 freighters and passenger ships checked in and out of Qeshm during the period, of which 106 weighed over 1,000 tons.”

On the status of tourism in the island, he said “since the beginning of the current Iranian year, more than 5 million tourists have visited the island, which indicates 6% growth.”

Qeshm Island is located a few kilometers off the southern coast of Iran (Persian Gulf), opposite the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Khamir.

The favorable features of the port attract investments in areas of pier construction and cargo transportation to Europe and East Asia.

Earlier, financial and investment deputy of Qeshm Free Trade Zone Organization Farzin Haqdel announced that a multipurpose port will be established is Suza, with a 700-million-euro budget fully funded by foreign investors.
