A total of 24.98 million tons of goods were loaded and unloaded at the ports of the southern Hormozgan Province during the first quarter of the current Iranian year (March 21-June 21), of which non-oil goods amounted to 16.62 million tons and oil byproducts 8.36 million tons, according to Hossein Abbasinejad, director general of Hormozgan’s Ports and Maritime Organization.
Shahid Rajaee Port accounted for the lion’s share of the throughput with 20.51 million tons, IRNA reported.
Noting that the loading of non-oil goods increased by 27% year-on-year, the official said, “A total of 9.92 million tons of non-oil products were exported from the province’s ports to target countries, registering a 54.9% increase compared with the same period of last year.”
According to the official, Q1 exports of oil products stood at 2.74 million tons.
Transit of the non-oil products stood at 1.6 million tons during the same period, he added.
Hormozgan Province’s ports include Abu Musa, Aftab, Parsian, Tiab, Jask, Charak, Khamir, Sirri, Sirik, Shahid Bahonar, Shahid Rajaee, Shahid Haqqani, Qeshm, Kuh Mobarak, Kish, Lavan, Lengeh, Nokhaylo and Hormoz.
Shahid Rajaee, located in the southern Hormozgan Province, is Iran’s biggest commercial port. The namesake special economic zone accounts for the highest share of all goods exported from and imported to Iran.
The economic zone, which has a loading/unloading capacity of 100 million tons per year, accounts for over half of Iran's trade and about two-thirds of total freight transit through the country.
The lion’s share of Iran's containers are handled in Shahid Rajaee Port Complex. With 18 gantry cranes and 40 berths, it is the most advanced container port of Iran.
Launched in 1985, the port has expanded every year and is currently connected to 80 ports worldwide.
The significance of this port lies in its large capacity, including its location in the Persian Gulf, container terminal, fuel bunkering, access to 24 kilometers of railroads and round-the-clock truck transportation.
