Iran annually needs 16 million cubic meters of wood, but only 5.5-6 million cubic meters are supplied by domestic production and the rest should be imported, according to the head of Iran’s Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization.
“Iran is located in an arid region and its commercial forests, with an area of 2 million hectares, are located in the north of the country, which are vital for the preservation of Iran's ecology. Therefore, their harvesting has been prohibited for about six years now,” Abbasali Nobakhat was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.
Referring to the government plan to plant one billion saplings in four years, the official said, “To meet the needs of the domestic market, we need to import 10 million cubic meters of wood per year. When it comes to imports, we are concerned about the transmission of pests and tree diseases through the import of timber and wood, which is a threat to our vegetation.”
Wood fibers (cellulosic elements used to make materials, including chipboard and MDF) account for the lion’s share of wood consumption in Iran.
