    Apparent Steel Use Up 14%

Apparent steel use in Iran has increased during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022- Jan. 20) compared with last year's corresponding period, latest data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association show.

ASU is defined as production plus imports minus exports, sometimes also adjusted for changes in inventories.

It stood at 16.29 million tons for finished products, registering a 14% year-on-year increase.

Long steel products accounted for the biggest share of finished steel consumption with 8.45 million tons, up 17%.

Rebar grabbed the biggest share in this section with 6.93 million tons, up 20%; followed by beams with 941,000 tons, up 2%; and L-beam, T-beam and other types of beams with 578,000 tons, up 8%.

Flat steel products accounted for 7.6 million tons of finished steel apparent use, up 10%.

Among flat steel products, hot-rolled coil had the biggest share with 7.31 million tons (up 11%), followed by cold-rolled coil with 2.19 million tons (down 4%) and coated coil with 1.27 million tons (up 22%).

ASU stood at 19.91 million tons for semi-finished products, registering a 14% rise.

The apparent use for billet and bloom stood at 11.23 million tons, up 14%. For slab, it increased by 15% to 8.67 million tons.

Direct reduced iron consumption stood at 26.77 million tons during the period under review, up 8%.

Iran’s global standing in crude steel production has improved, as the country was the world’s ninth biggest producer in January 2022, new data released by the World Steel Association show.

Earlier, the country held the 10th rank for a long time.

Iranian steel mills produced a total of 2.7 million tons of crude steel in January, registering a 27.7% rise compared with the same month of 2022.

Iran registered the biggest growth in crude steel production during the month under review among the top 10 biggest producers in the world. It is placed after Brazil (eighth) with 2.8 million tons (down 4.8%).

Crude steel is defined as steel in its first solid (or usable) form: ingots and semi-finished products (billets, blooms and slabs). This is not to be confused with liquid steel, which is steel poured.

Iranian steel mills produced a total of 30.6 million tons of crude steel in 2022, registering an 8% growth compared with 2021.

MSC is the biggest steelmaker in Iran and the Middle East and North Africa region, accounting for about half of the country's steel production.
