The Planning and Resources Management Department of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development has released a report on the volume of cargo and passenger traffic via four modes of transportation during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Nov. 21).
The report’s findings are as follows:
Road
A total of 333 million tons of cargo were transported via road in Iran during the period, registering a 2% rise compared with the similar period of last year.
This is the highest volume registered during the first eight months of the past 10 years, News.mrud.ir reported.
The report noted that 6.5 million tons of foreign goods were transited through Iran via road during the same period, indicating an 8% year-on-year rise.
The highest transit volume via road during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2014-15 with 8.2 million tons.
A total of 85 million passengers were transported by roads during the same period, registering a 27% increase compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The highest passenger traffic via road during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2012-13 with 151 million passengers.
Railroad
A total of 29.7 million tons of freight were transported by railroad during the period, registering a 7% fall compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The report attributes the decrease in rail cargo transportation to the impacts of economic sanctions, including the ban on transit of oil products in addition to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last fiscal year (March 2021-22), 47 million tons of cargo were transported via railroad.
Foreign transit via rail stood at 939,000 tons during the period, registering a 24.27% fall.
The main reason for this decline is the decline in transit of sulfur via Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
Rail passenger transportation stood at 12.7 million, up 54%. Last year, 21 million passengers chose to travel by railroad.
The report noted that 10.84 passenger-kilometers were transported during the period, registering a 60% rise compared with the similar period of last year. The figure stood at 11.14 pkm in the last fiscal year (March 2021-22).
Air
A total of 21,327 passengers were transported on domestic flights, besides 1,991 via international flights, during the period registered a respective rise of 24% and 158% compared with the similar period of last year respectively.
The highest volume of passenger transportation for domestic flights during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2017-18 with 30 million. For international flights, it was 3 million passengers in the fiscal 2014-15.
The number of takeoffs and landings in domestic and international flights stood at 187,000 (down 11%) and 16,000 (up 129%) respectively, the report added.
The highest number of takeoffs and landings in domestic flights during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2017-18 with 246,000. For international flights, it was 19,000 in the fiscal 2014-15.
Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the country’s busiest airport during the period under review, transporting more than 8 million passengers. Some 70,000 takeoffs and landings were registered at Mehrabad during the period under review.
Marine
A total of 100 million tons of freight were transported via Iranian commercial ports during the period, registering a 2% rise compared with the similar period of last year.
The highest volume of freight transportation registered at Iranian ports during the first eight months of the past 10 years was 105 million tons in the fiscal 2017-18.
Container throughput during the period under review stood at 1.55 million TEUs, indicating a 12% rise.
The highest volume of container throughput during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2017-18 with 2.05 million TEUs.
Passenger transport via Iranian ports stood at 10 million during the period, showing a 67% increase compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The highest number of passengers transported from Iran ports during the first eight months of the past 10 years was registered in the fiscal 2019-20 with 13 million passengers.
