More than 5,000 tons of figs worth $15 million were exported from Estahban County of Fars Province during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Nov. 21), according to a local official, Hamid Reza Izadi.
“Estahban has the world’s biggest organic and rain-fed fig farms. The production of the fruit plays a significant role in keeping the local economy robust,” he was quoted as saying by IRIB News.
Izadi noted that Fars Province’s total exports during the period under review stood at 1.4 million tons worth $1.5 billion, registering a 37% and 23% rise in tonnage and value respectively compared with the similar period of last year.
Lorestan in the northwest and Kerman in the southeast are other major producers of fig among Iranian provinces.
