Iranian Expo in Karachi to Promote Strong Footing in Pakistani Market

An exclusive exhibition of Iranian products is scheduled to be held from Jan. 16-18 in Karachi, Pakistan.

The exhibitors will showcase their products and services in a wide range of fields, including oil, gas and petrochemicals, water and electricity, mining, steel and related industries, construction materials and supplies, agricultural industries, food, packaging machinery, transit, logistics and transportation, home appliances, carpets, chandeliers and furniture, according to the deputy head of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture for international affairs.

Noting that Iran plans to send a business delegation to Karachi to hold talks with their Pakistani counterpart at specialized panels on the sidelines of this exhibition, Hesameddin Hallaj added that the event is a good opportunity to network with business owners in the neighboring country with the aim of increasing Iran's 2% share of Pakistan's $80 billion annual trade, TCCIM reported.

“Karachi, with 15 million population, is the hub of economic and commercial activities of Pakistan, where the consulate and economic offices of more than 100 countries are located,” he said.

“The presence of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, in addition to the headquarters of most of the commercial companies, economic and investment holdings and important manufacturing factories of Pakistan in Karachi is one of the reasons Iran has chosen this city as the venue for this exhibition.”

Hallaj noted that TCCIM and the Trade Promotion Organization signed a cooperation memorandum in the eighth month of the current Iranian year (Oct. 23-Nov. 21), for forging synergy and planning for the development of Iranian exports to the Pakistani market.

Based on this memorandum, it is possible to become familiar with the Pakistani market and to increase exports by sharing the capabilities and development capacities of private and public sectors.

The official further said that in the framework of this memorandum, the two sides have agreed to cooperate on issues related to facilitation and development of exports to Pakistan, such as expansion of the clearing mechanism between Quetta and Zahedan to merchants who are members of the Tehran and Karachi chambers of commerce, improving tourism cooperation between the two countries and holding specialized and exclusive joint exhibitions.

Referring to Pakistan as the most populous neighboring country of Iran, Hallaj said, “In view of economic opportunities, including the existence of free trade agreements and joint border trade agreements, Pakistan is a suitable market for the development of capable Iranian factories’ exports. In this regard, several business delegations have been exchanged with this country in recent months.”

Iran’s exports to Pakistan stood at 1.6 million tons worth $704 million from the beginning of the current Iranian year on March 21 to the end of the seventh month on Oct. 22, according to the spokesperson of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, Morteza Emadi.

Liquefied petroleum gases and hydrocarbon gas liquids, bitumen, milk powder, liquefied natural gas and liquefied butane were the main exports, IRIB News reported

Iran’s imports from Pakistan reached 512,000 tons worth $563 million during the same period.

Rice, mango, sesame seeds and banana were the main goods imported during the period.

The above data indicate that total trade between the two sides was over $1.26 billion during the period, with Iran registering about $141 million in trade surplus.

“Iran and Pakistan will soon start free trade,” said Chairman of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture Gholamhossein Shafei in his recent meeting with President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Irfan Iqbal Sheikh.

An Iranian trade delegation from the Iranian private sector led by Shafei was in Karachi for an official visit in October.

There, the visiting delegation participated in the first meeting of Pakistan-Iran Business Council.

The mission was made up of 26 businesspeople active in the fields of food and agricultural products, petrochemicals, chemicals and textile, as well as heads of chambers of commerce of several Iranian cities and members of parliament, ICCIMA’s news portal reported.
