Turkey meat production in Iran stands at 50,000 to 55,000 tons per year, according to the head of Poultry Production Department of the Agriculture Ministry.
“Per capita consumption has experienced a twofold rise over the past few years and increased from 300 grams to 600-650 grams per annum,” Roqayyeh Pedmarang was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
“We plan to increase per capita consumption to 1 kilogram per year in the near future.”
The official noted that the first turkey farms were launched in Iran around 10 years ago and since then, the industry has made great progress.
“Yet it is too early to compare Iran’s turkey production industry with that of other countries. What is definite though is that our potential for growth is high,” she added.
According to Pedmarang, Iran is presently the world’s 29th biggest turkey producer and consumer, with the US and Italy occupying the top slot.
