Thirty percent of Iranian households, i.e., 7.8 million households, made at least one trip in the fiscal 2021-22, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Statistical Center of Iran, a total of 24.68 million trips were made last year (started March 2021).
The number of domestic trips stood at 24.63 million, of which 42% required overnight accommodation and 58% didn’t.
Khorasan Razavi, Mazandaran, Tehran, Fars and Isfahan accounted for the highest number of trips requiring overnight accommodation.
Mazandaran, Isfahan, Tehran, Fars and Gilan were top destinations of visits that did not require overnight accommodation.
Most visits, which included an overnight stay (65%), were made with the aim of visiting friends and relatives, 16% were made with the goal of sightseeing and 10% for receiving medical treatment.
Most trips, which did not include an overnight stay (31%), were aimed at visiting friends and relatives, 24% medical treatment and 20% with the aim of sightseeing.
Most visitors (76%) stayed with relatives, 12% stayed at their own villas and apartments, 6% at rented places, 3% at public accommodations, 2% at accommodations categorized as others, 1% in tents and 1% at places provided by organizations.
According to SCI, the “leisure and culture” group, which tracks changes in consumer goods and services prices of traveling by Iranians, registered a 39.9% annualized inflation in the last Iranian year.
For a long time, the unfavorable state of Iran’s tourism sector has been talked about and compared to that of neighboring countries, until the Covid-19 dealt the final blow, reads an article in Ayandenegar, a monthly journal published by the Tehran Chamber of Commerce.
Iran’s tourism industry has barely survived thanks to domestic travels and the limited number of foreign trips and tours; just like before the pandemic.
