Iran’s moquette production currently stands at around 100 square meters per year, according to the head of Moquette and Flooring Committee of Textile Industries Association.
“Fifty Iranian companies are active in the field of moquette production with a nominal capacity of 200 million square meters per year. Yet, only around 30 factories work at full capacity and just half of the overall capacity is being utilized at present,” Gholamreza Allahverdi was also quoted as saying by IRIB News.
“Annual domestic demand for moquette is between 70 and 80 square meters. The remainder of the local production is exported to neighboring countries,” he added.
Allahverdi noted that 95% of the industry’s raw materials are provided locally, yet for the machinery the country almost entirely depends on imports as only 5% are manufactured inside Iran.
Moquette, derived from the French word for carpet, is a type of woven pile fabric in which cut or uncut threads form a short dense cut or loop pile. As well as giving it a distinctive velvet-like feel, the pile construction is particularly durable, and ideally suited to applications such as public transport. Its upright fibers form a flexible, non-rigid surface, which are constantly displaced to give durability and anti-stain benefits. Traditional moquette fabrics are made from a wool nylon face with an interwoven cotton backing.
