More than 103 million passengers used road public transportation in the last Iranian Year (March 2021-22), according to the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization.
A total of 56.45 million or 57% of total passengers travelled by bus, Mehr News Agency reported, adding that 24.3 million (24%) took minibus and 21.61 million used taxi.
Out of the total transported passengers, 55% travelled inside a province (110 kilometers per person on average) and 45% travelled between provinces (404 kilometers).
In general, the average distance per passenger over the period under review was 230 kilometers.
Out of the total fuel consumed, 59% pertained to traveling inside a province and 41% to traveling between provinces.
Cooperative transportation companies accounted for 17% of total passenger transportation while companies belonging to the private sector accounted for 83%.
A total of 68,659 road public transportation vehicles are active in Iran, 14,497 of which are buses, 23,999 minibuses and 30,163 taxies, accounting for 21.1%, 35% and 43.9% of all the available road transportation fleet respectively.
On average, the buses traveling on Iranian roads are 12.42 years old, minibuses are 25.1 years old and taxies are 11.3 years old.
The Ministry of Roads and Urban Development earlier reported that 21 million passengers took to public road transportation in the first two months of the current fiscal year (started March 21), indicating a 31% growth compared with the same period of last year.
A 10-year record high for road transportation over the first two months of the year was recorded in the fiscal 2012-13 with 38 million passengers.
A total of 1.8 million tons of goods transited via Iran’s roads over the period under review, registering a 50% growth year-on-year.
