A total of 40,000 tons of mango are produced in the southeastern provinces of Iran annually, according to a member of the Horticultural Sciences Research Institute.
“At present, there are 3,300 hectares of mango plantations that bear fruit and 900 hectares that don’t,” Ebrahim Saboki was also quoted as saying by IRIB News.
Hormozgan, Sistan-Baluchestan and Kerman are the top three mango producing provinces of Iran.
Saboki said the area under mango cultivation has remained the same for years and the main reason is water shortage.
There are more than 1,000 types of mangoes in the world, but only a few varieties can be found in Iran.
