A total of 9,714 tons of boney fish were harvested in the three northern provinces bordering the Caspian Sea since the beginning of the fishing season in early October, which shows a 12.17% decline compared with the similar period of last year, caretaker of Iran Fisheries Organization’s Department of Harvest and Port Affairs said last week.
“There are a few reasons why harvest has declined. The main ones being bad weather conditions and colder than usual water temperatures,” Mostafa Beheshtian was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
The official noted that three types of fish are harvested in the north, namely mullet, Caspian Kutum and common carp.
The province of Mazandaran has the biggest share of the total annual fish yield followed by Gilan and Golestan.
Fishermen in the three provinces are employed in 123 fishing cooperatives, 117 of which were active this harvest season.
The harvest season for bony fish in the Caspian Sea begins in October and lasts until April the next year. Some 15 species of bony fish inhabit the Caspian Sea.
