    Rise in Transit via Mahiroud Border Crossing

    A total of 20,454 tons of goods were transited from Mahiroud border crossing in South Khorasan Province during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 21-June 21), registering a 6% rise compared with the similar period of last year, according to a local customs official.

    “These shipments were transited via 752 trucks. The figure registers a 46% increase year-on-year. The transited goods were mainly flour, sugar, areca palm, diesel and chickpeas that were transported from Russia, India, Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Turkey to Afghanistan,” Hassan Rahimizadeh was also quoted as saying by IRNA.

    The official also noted that in the same period, around 279,995 tons of goods worth $97.49 million were exported from Mahiroud, indicating a 55% and 52% decline in weight and value respectively compared with the corresponding period of last year.

    “The exports included vegetable oils, distillate fuels, fruits and vegetables, light hydrocarbons, tiles and ceramics, cement, diesel, cast iron ingots, metallurgical coke, dates and saffron that were sent to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Iraq and Kazakhstan,” he added.

    Imports from the border crossing in Q1 hit 1,389 tons worth $1.92 million, registering a YOY increase of 305% in weight and 15% in value.

    “The imports mostly included mine equipment and machinery, rice, combed cotton, alfalfa seeds, wheat straw and talc that were purchased from Germany, Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan.”

    South Khorasan Province has 331 kilometers of common borders with the neighboring Afghanistan. It has four border markets along the border, namely Mahiroud, Yazdan, Golordeh and Dokohaneh.
