Direct flights between Rasht in northern Iran’s Gilan Province and Russia’s Astrakhan will start on May 6, according to the manager of Gilan Airport.
“Flights are scheduled to operate every Fridays. This arrangement will continue until the end of the current calendar year [March 20, 2023],” Mohsen Mirhosseini was quoted by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development as saying.
Mirhosseini recalled that Gilan hosts the Russian Consulate and Astrakhan is home to the Iranian Trade Center, adding that establishing an air route between the two cities can help expand two-way economic ties.
The Russian port of Astrakhan is a hub for commercial activities of nearly 200 Iranian firms making it the largest center of Iranian trade in Russia.
Iran’s first commercial center was inaugurated in Astrakhan in October 2017 with the aim of boosting bilateral trade.
The center, launched by Gilan Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, opened 100 years after the shutdown of the previous establishment in Astrakhan.
The institution is home to 14 chambers of commerce and industries from 14 Iranian provinces.
