More than 7.5 million tons of foreign goods were transited through Iranian roads during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021-Jan. 20), registering a 103% rise compared with the similar period of last year, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
The ministry’s data tracking transit volumes over the last 10 years show the figure stood at its height during the first 10 months of the fiscal 2014-15 with 10.3 million tons, News.mrud.ir reported.
Road passenger transport stood at 84 million during the 10-month period, experiencing a 12% rise compared with the corresponding period of last year.
In the 10-year review, passenger transportation via roads reached its highest of 197 million in the fiscal 2011-12.
The ministry also reported that a total of 1.56 million tons of freight were transited via Iran’s rail network during the same 10 months, registering a 189% rise compared with the similar period of last year. The figure, it noted, is a 10-year high.
However, domestic freight transportation via railroad saw a 7% fall and stood at 39 million tons. Fiscal 2020-21 marked the highest volume on record during the 10 years under review with 42 million tons.
Over the 10-month under review, a total of 16.8 million passengers were transported via railroad, indicating a 49.4% increase compared with the similar period of last year. The highest 10-year record was registered in the fiscal 2019-20 with 24 million passengers.
