An airport was inaugurated on Greater Tunb Island on Wednesday in the presence of the head of the Civil Aviation Organization, Mohammad Mohammadi-Bakhsh, CEO of Iran Airports Company Siavash Amirmokri and other state and provincial officials.
“The airport will be used for passenger transportation. It has a 2,150-meter runway and is located 80 miles southwest of Bandar Abbas Airport,” Mohammadi-Bakhsh was quoted as saying by IRIB News.
The airport belongs to the marine forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
The CAO chief said flights will be operated to and from this southernmost airport round the clock.
Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb are two small islands in the eastern Persian Gulf, close to the Strait of Hormuz. They lie some 12 kilometers from each other and 20 kilometers south of the Iranian island of Qeshm. The islands are administered by Iran as part of its Hormozgan Province.
Greater Tunb is spread over 10.3 square kilometers while Lesser Tunb spans 2 square km.
