A total of 13,419 tons of sprat were harvested from the northern Caspian Sea during the current Iranian year’s first nine months (March 21-Dec. 21), registering an 8% rise compared with the corresponding period of last year, according to an official with Iran Fisheries Organization.
“Mazandaran and Gilan provinces accounted for 63% and 37% of the total harvest respectively,” Mokhtar Akhoundi was also quoted as saying by Mizan Online.
About 90% of the sprat harvested from the Caspian Sea are processed into fish powder, he added.
Sprat, the common name applied to a group of forage fish belonging to the genus Sprattus in the family Clupeidae, is recognized for its nutritional value, as it contains high levels of polyunsaturated fats, considered beneficial to the human diet.
