Iran’s land border crossings have been closed to passengers starting Dec. 25 for a period of 15 days to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, according to the spokesperson of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration.
“The measure was taken at the request of the National Coronavirus Headquarters and the Interior Ministry. As a result, passengers may not cross land borders to Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Armenia for 15 days as of Saturday,” Rouhllah Latifi was also quoted as saying by ILNA.
As for Turkmenistan, the spokesman added, land border crossing has been closed since the outbreak of the Covid-19 more than two years ago.
Latifi noted that for those who are permanent residents of neighboring countries, or traveling for reasons of education, health and trade, they were allowed to cross the borders.
“Border crossing in the freight transportation sector is exempt from the ban, and so are trade cargo fleets during the 15-day period,” he said.
