From the beginning of the fishing season in mid-October to Nov. 29, bony fish harvest in the three northern provinces bordering the Caspian Sea exceeded 920 tons, marking a 23% rise compared with the similar period of last year, director general of Iran Fisheries Organization’s Harvest Department said recently.
“The output includes 487 tons of mullet, 217 tons of Caspian Kutum, 200 tons of common carp and 16 tons of other types of fish accounting for 53%, 23%, 22% and 2% of the total harvest respectively,” Mokhtar Akhoundi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
The official added that Mazandaran Province accounted for 55% (509 tons) of the harvest while Gilan with 340 tons and Golestan with 71 tons had a respective share of 37% and 8% of the total harvest.
“Fishermen in the three provinces are members of 123 cooperatives, 117 of which have been active so far this year. Each fishing company’s per capita harvest during the period under review stood around 8 tons,” he said.
“During last year’s harvest season [Oct. 6, 2020, to April 9, 2021], more than 11,0000 tons of bony fish were caught in the Iranian territorial waters of Caspian Sea, which showed a 1% rise compared with the year before.”
Akhoundi noted that in the last harvest season, yields stood at 5,413 tons in Gilan and 1,052 in Golestan provinces, showing a 14% and 23% rise respectively, in addition to 4,596 tons in Mazandaran Province, registering a 14% YOY decline.
“Out of the total yields, 56% were Caspian Kutum, 18% mullet, 14% common carp and 12% other types of fish,” he added.
Some 15 species of bony fish thrive in the Caspian Sea, the harvest season of which annually begins in October and lasts until April of the following year.
