It is estimated that a total of 1.8 million tons of sugar will be produced in Iran in the current Iranian year (March 2021-22), which is sufficient to supply more than 70% of the domestic demand, according to the manager of the Agriculture Ministry’s so-called “Beetroot Project.”
“This year, we produced close to 5.5 million tons of beetroot in spring and more than 1.4 million tons are predicted in autumn. This makes close to 7 million tons in total, which will give us around 950,000 tons of refined sugar,” Peyman Hesadi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
Sugar production is expected to exceed 1.8 million tons this year, he added.
According to the official, per capita sugar consumption in Iran amounts to 27 kilograms per year, which is 2 kg more than the global average of 25 kg.
Hesadi said annual demand is somewhere between 2.2 million tons and 2.3 million tons per annum.
Based on the latest figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, unrefined sugar reached 714,000 tons from the beginning of the current Iranian year on March 21 up until July 12, registering a 154% hike compared with the similar period of last year.
The government aims to reach 95% self-sufficiency in sugar production by 2025.
