A total of 7 million tons of sugarcanes were produced in Iran from the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21) up until April 20, showing a 70% hike compared with the similar period of last year, according to a report released by the Government Trading Corporation affiliated with the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade.
Based on the GTC report, close to 800,000 tons of sugar will be derived from this volume of sugarcane, Mehr News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Beetroot yields saw a 70-80% YOY upsurge in the same period.
A total of 2.5 million tons of refined sugar were produced in Iran during the last Iranian year (March 2020-21), which sufficiently met the domestic demand, according to the director general of the Non-Metal Industries Affairs Bureau with the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade.
“The raw material for the production of 1 million tons of sugar was imported and for the production of the remaining 1.5 million tons, local sugarcane and sugarbeet were used,” Mohsen Safdari was also quoted as saying by Young Journalists Club.
Safdari noted that 49 sugar factories are presently active in Iran with a total nominal capacity of refining 5.3 million tons of sugar per year.
