Shiraz Agro Sector’s Weather-Related Losses Reach $22m

Extreme cold on April 5 inflicted losses amounting to 4.88 trillion rials ($22 million) on 39,500 hectares of farms and orchards in Shiraz, the capital city of Fars Province. 
More than 29,000 hectares of farms suffered losses of up to 1.24 trillion rials [$5.8 million]. Most of the damage to the agronomical sector was inflicted on wheat farms (19,000 hectares worth $3.37 million). 
“Barley, colza, pulses, onion and potato farms also experienced hefty damage,” Zabihollah Sirousi, the head of Shiraz Agricultural Organization, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Some 10,000 hectares of orchards also suffered losses to the tune of 3.64 trillion rials ($17 million). 
About 2,700 hectares of apple orchards suffered damages worth $7.47 million. 
Pistachio, prime rose, olive, pomegranate, grape, walnut, almond and fig orchards were the hardest hit.
