A total of 10.38 trillion rials ($42 million) of losses have been caused to East Azarbaijan Province’s agriculture sector due to extreme weather and natural disasters since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21).
“Frost caused more than 4.67 trillion rials [$19 million] in losses, which account for 45% of the overall damage. Losses caused by hailstorm stood at 4.48 trillion rials [$18 million], which accounted for 43.2% of the losses,” Akbar Fat’hi, a local official, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
He added that storm, flood and fire also caused losses amounting to 1 trillion rials ($4 million), 206.75 billion rials ($850.823) and 2.99 billion rials ($12,300) to the northeasters province’s agricultural subsectors.
East Azarbaijan Province has 1.22 million hectares of farmlands and orchards, 800,000 hectares of which are rain-fed and the rest are irrigated land. 
The province annually produces close to 5 million tons of agricultural products.
