Demand for gasoline doubled during the Nowrouz (Persian New Year) holiday season last month compared to the same period in 2020, head of the Iran Gas Station Owners Union said.
“As the government eased coronavirus lockdowns, gasoline sale in Iran, which had plummeted to less than 42 million liters/day in 2020, surpassed 90 ml/d in the 13-day period [March 20-April 2],” Homayoun Salehi was quoted as saying by ILNA.
Most families canceled their travel plans during the annual holiday in 2020 as the coronavirus spread and inflicted a human toll across continents unseen in recent history. However, last month many people tired of the extended lockdowns ignored government pleas not to travel.
“Gasoline consumption that is now around 80 million liters a day is expected to decline as a ten-day lockdown was announced late Thursday.”
According to Tehran Governor General Anoushirvan Mohseni Bandpey, quarantine in Tehran is not doable. “All non-essential businesses have been closed for two weeks and the restrictions will be renewed if necessary.”
A total of 134 million coronavirus cases have been reported globally with 2.9 million fatalities. In Iran, the coronavirus outbreak was first reported in the shrine city of Qom 125km south of Tehran. Health officials on Friday afternoon confirmed 2.01 million Covid infections and 64,000 deaths. The numbers continue to rise at alarming speed as the deadly virus spreads,  social distancing protocols are not upheld and vaccinations are delayed.
