A total of 15 trillion rials ($60 million) in losses were inflicted on North Khorasan Province’s agriculture sector by natural disasters (frost, flood, storm and hailstorm) during the last Iranian year (March 2020-21), according to the head of Crisis Management Bureau of the provincial agricultural organization.
“Some 4 trillion rials [$16 million] of the total losses were caused by a cold spell in mid-March,” Hosseinali Farhadi was also quoted as saying by IRNA.
The official noted that orchards, farms and agricultural infrastructure suffered 63%, 33% and 4% of the losses respectively.
North Khorasan produces agricultural products worth 77.57 trillion rials ($310 million) per year, accounting for 1.1% of Iran’s output in this sector.
There are 344,000 hectares of arable land in this northeastern province, 300,000 of which are farms and the remaining 44,000 hectares are orchards.
