Mushroom production in Iran is estimated to reach 165,000 tons by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20).
“Around 942 tons of mushrooms worth $2.54 million were exported during the first nine months of the current fiscal year [March 20-Dec. 20, 2020] to Iraq, Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and CIS states,” Gholamreza Taqavi, an Agriculture Ministry official, was quoted as saying by IRNA.
He added that last year (March 2019-20), 170,000 tons of edible mushrooms were produced in the country, 6,000 tons of which worth $8.4 million were exported.
At present, 2,880 mushroom production units are active in Iran, with the provinces of Tehran, Alborz, Isfahan, Khorasan Razavi, Fars and Qazvin considered cultivation hubs.
According to Chairman of the Union of Mushroom Producers Mohammad Hassan Afshar, per capita mushroom consumption in Iran has increased in recent years.
