The suspension of flights to and from the UK has been extended until March 10, due to the spread of the new Covid-19 strain in the European country, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran Civil Aviation Organization’s Spokesman Mohammad Hassan Zibakhsh.
The suspension was initiated on Dec. 22, 2020, and were to last for a fortnight, Fars News Agency reported.
At the time, Shahram Adamnejad, deputy roads minister for transportation affairs, said the measure was taken at the request of the Health Ministry and the National Coronavirus Headquarters.
“The decision has been made to prevent the transmission of the new strain into the country and to protect our people’s health,” IRNA quoted him as saying on Dec. 20.
Similar measures have been taken by some European Union member states to protect their citizens from contracting the new Covid-19 variant that is said to be 70% more transmissible.
